Almost one year ago, 4 members of our school traveled over 10,000 km to compete against potent adversaries from every part of the world in a contest of strategic skills, business acumen and raw intellect. They returned to IE, victorious, proud and wealthy. They were the deserving winners of Cerebration 2006.
Cerebration is the annual case competition organised and hosted by the National University of Singapore Business School. Last time, there were 641 teams from 100 universities across 30 countries who vied for the title and the opportunity to present their case to an elite panel of the most influential business people of the region. This time NUS Business School is pulling out all stops to further globalise this event and confirm it as an annual beacon of international business school talent.
The website www.nus.edu.sg/cerebration has detailed instructions; you first have to form 4 member teams and register yourself by the 17th of November at the latest.
There are 4 rounds in the process, the first of which you are required to submit a short Executive Summary. Only 6 teams will remain by the 3rd round and NUS Business School will fly them over to the paradise city of Singapore and host them till the end of the competition.
Primary Deadlines:
First Registration Deadline: 3rd November, 2006 (1800 Singapore Time)
Final Registration Deadline: 17th November, 2006 (1800 Singapore Time)
Deadline for Submission of Executive: 8th December, 2006 (1800 Singapore Time)
Check out www.nus.edu.sg/cerebration for further details.
NUS Business School is looking forward to receiving as many entries from IE as possible. It’s time for you to defend your title.

They say that people in IT and Finance are sometimes introverted, but this is a stereotype which does not apply to our students of the MFM and the MMTDB. The other day we held the Cross-cultural workshop and you should have seen them!. Who would have imagined that the first thing they did at IE was play cards!
We discussed how dangerous it is to use stereotypes, and also talked about miscommunications sometimes due to lack of language proficiency … I have to tell you the story they told me about a guy from the United States who went to do business in Colombia, and as it is customary, was invited to have dinner and go dancing. Everything was great except for the fact that it was too hot on the dance floor. Suddenly everything froze when he said in his poor Spanish “Tengo que parar chicas. Uf, estoy muy caliente!” Can you guess why?
Even native Spanish speakers who speak the same language as a mother tongue often have misunderstandings. Just ask a Spaniard when they plan to arrive at a party that they have been told begins at nine!.

LOCATION ON THE MAP
For the second year running, current students and alumni took part in one of the highlights of the MBA sailing scene. The atmosphere and events were met with great enthusiasm by IE’s eight-member crew.
![]()
The MBA’s Cup Regatta, organized by SDA Bocconi, was hosted once again by the prestigious Yacht Club Italiano in the lovely waters of the Genoese coast off Santa Margherita Ligure. What started six years ago as a rather informal regatta for Bocconi alumni has become one of the largest international MBA sports events, with some 400 students from top European and US Business Schools taking part. The competition was as tough as ever, with some very experienced crews on state of the art yachts.
Insituto de Empresa’s eight member crew hailed together from six different countries and was comprised of Johannes Tinsobin IMBA05 (Austria), Carlos Vázquez IMBA05, Pablo Divasson IMBA05 (both from Spain), Marcos Ferrer IMBA06 (Argentina), Wim Zwaenepoel IMBA06 (Belgium), Karim Kreaa IMBA06 (Spain), Alexander Corrie IMBA06 (UK) and Alberto Ordiales IMBA06 (Mexico). They were sailing for the first time together and soon became effective at their tasks. The aptly-called IE boat “Escondida II” was initially hard to find upon our late night arrival, but proved to be a real character and a firm old friend during the races.
IE’s crew was easily the best looking. A uniform of white polos and white caps with the blue IE logo was chosen, because in Italy you always go in style. These good looks attracted the attention of Glamour Magazine, The Sailing Channel and the local crowds.
The 4 day event also featured social events and a conference entitled “A wider, wilder world: competing overseas” with the key note speaker Alfonso Iozzo, CEO of the Italian bank Sao Paolo, giving interesting insights into the European banking industry.
The MBA’s Cup Regatta provides a good opportunity to put into practice essential management skills learned during an MBA (such as planning, forming a strategy, working as a team, making the most of available technologies and tools and competing abroad). The setting was healthy and competitive, and there was the chance to meet present and future managers from top-tier MBA schools, such as Wharton, NYU Stern, Kellogg, Bocconi, INSEAD, IESE and LBS.
The team thoroughly enjoyed the regatta and looks forward to bringing home a trophy next year (after taking “Escondida II” to the America’s Cup in Valencia).
