English version
“It is not easy either for an entrepreneur to be openly gay.” Meeting with Jesús Encinar, CEO of Idealista.com
On February 7th, IE’s newly formed gay and lesbian network, IEOut, organized its first event at our campus. IEOut invited well-known entrepreneur Jesús Encinar to address the challenges and opportunities of being openly gay in the business community. Over 50 people attended the event showing a strong interest in discussions about diversity and how to make diversity a competitive edge. The attendees included many current and former students from IE, as well as professionals from Madrid and the rest of Spain.
Dean Santiago Iniguez and Celia da Anca, Director of the Center for Diversity at IE opened the evening with a welcome message. Both underlined the importance of diversity in today’s competitive environment and the role IEOut can play in promoting and understanding the importance of diversity within our business school. A summary of the event, along with videos and pictures, is available on Jesús Encinar’s blog (www.jesusencinar.com).
The career of Jesús is an interesting tale of commitment to personal and professional passions and ideas. In a frank and open way he explained how he came out of the closed while attending Harvard Business School and the subsequent support and resistance he met in and outside that school. But the confidence and respect he gained helped him starting his own business back in Spain. In 2000 he and his partners founded a web-based company, Idealista.com, and made it into the most successful real estate website in Spain, generating over €5m in revenue last year and employing 150 people. A new initiative, www.11870com, is also due to be launched imminently.
So what are the implications of being gay for professionals or for the companies that employ them? For many professionals being openly gay is not self-evident. There can be many reasons behind each individual’s decision, one being fear of repercussions. At the meeting Jesús advocated directness and openness about ones sexual identity. Being able to be who you are is essential for your well-being and ability to be productive at work, he said. Jesús doesn’t think it easier for a successful entrepreneur to be openly gay, however it does offer opportunities to create change. Jesús is not afraid to ask potential investors to commit themselves to gay-friendly companies. As for Idealista.com, no formal protocol or guidelines exists but Jesús believes that his statements about the importance of gay tolerance in Spain’s leading newspapers enhance the company’s image as a great place to work no matter who you are.
Jesús is convinced that homophobia exists no matter where you are or where you go. But as the audience pointed out, homophobia has many shapes and forms. In Spain and many European countries gays and lesbians are protected by law and enjoy the same rights as others, but the actual work environment can be hostile. In the US many rights depend on where you live and who you work for. Companies that offer the same benefits to gay and lesbian workers have an advantage.
Professional and social networking is very important to obtain visibility and to abolish the stigma of being gay.
Employees from Merck and IBM explained how their companies are actively promoting diversity within their companies for multiple reasons: to attract a talented and diverse workforce, to improve the ability of the firm to understand and compete in a globalized economy and to better serve market niches.
IEOut would like to thank Jesús Encinar and the attendees for coming to Instituto de Empresa and look forward to seeing more people at future events.
The photographIE club is inviting all IE students to an exciting night shots event this Friday, 23rd Feb07 at 22hr. We will start at the area between the Palacio Real and the huge cathedral opposite, Catedral de Nuestra Señora de la Almudena and will proceed thereafter to other very important places of interest and one of them will surely be the BOTW!
Please note that it is a “MUST” to bring at least two cans of beer or a bottle of wine, so you can use this as a tripod (probably you can also drink them ?). Don’t worry if you don’t have a camera; this is also meant to be a social gathering to mingle with other section’s folks. So just come along and have fun! If sufficient people are joining, we will assemble a great group photo. Don’t miss it!
Hope to see you soon, …because we want YOU!
