Please join the Emerging Markets Club and IE Net Impact in welcoming Enrique V. Iglesias, Secretary General of the Iberoamerican Secretariat General and Former President of the Inter-American Development Bank, and Danilo Piaggesi, Knowledge Economy Coordinator at the Inter-American Development Bank for a presentation on the:

Knowledge Economy: New Challenges for Innovation, Knowledge, and Sustainable Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The event will be held on Thursday, March 5 in S-105 at 17:00 hrs. As space is limited, please confirm your attendance
HERE.

Once you register, the attendance is obligatory. Failure to comply will result in barring you from future club events. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

The presentation will relate to the knowledge economy, in which intellectual capital such as know-how, expertise and intellectual property rights are becoming just as critical as traditional economic resources such as land, natural resources, and labor in producing sustainable economic growth.  We will explore the implications of this for Latin America and the Caribbean, where education, a sound information and communications technology infrastructure, innovation, social inclusion and entrepreneurship, and protection of intellectual property rights can converge in a virtuous cycle of increased knowledge and sustained economic growth. At the same time, we will discuss challenges and opportunities for Latin America and the Caribbean in maintaining competitiveness with the global pace of development in other areas such as China, Southeast Asia, and India.

According to the World Bank, Georgia is a small transition economy with a population of about 4.5 million people and a gross national income (GNI) per capita of US$1,560. Its location on the "Silk Road" between Europe and Asia has made it a transit conduit for goods being shipped through the Caucasus, and geographical features such as Georgia's Black Sea coast, mountains, and rich cultural history offer strong tourist potential. Other attributes include an educated labor force, widespread land ownership, and a long tradition of entrepreneurship. Fertile land and a favorable climate enable diverse agricultural production, including a range of fruits and vegetables, livestock, dairy products, nuts, and tea. The country has a long history of viticulture and some 500 varieties of grapes are cultivated. Recent investments in oil exploration have indicated significant oil and gas potential. Other physical resources include manganese, iron, coal, copper, gold, granite, limestone, marble, and mineral waters. Dense forests cover one third of the country and numerous fast-flowing rivers offer good hydropower potential.

This year Georgia entered the ranks of the top 25 most business friendly countries worldwide, according to the World Bank's Doing Business 2008. Georgia is ranked 18th out of 178 economies rated by the Doing Business report, a 19 position increase compared to last year. Georgia has been among the top ten reforming countries for the last three years in a row.

IMBA08 student Alistair Clark has proposed a new initiative: the Emerging Markets Club. The mission statement he is proposing is posted below. If you would like to join the club, please fill out the Registration Form available at Campus Online.

Mission statement:

To educate and allow discussion regarding emerging markets FROM A FINANCIAL INVESTMENT PERSPECTIVE (fixed income, natural resources, industry, and real estate acquisition) amongst faculty, IE students, visiting professionals and anyone else related to the topic or the school who participates in meetings in a constructive fashion. The emphasized, but not exclusive, countries to be discussed are BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China). Please note that this is not a club for social awareness or one that emphasizes the environmental concerns for development in emerging markets; while this is an important topic, it is a different subject for another club like NetImpact.¨
