"By 2012, worldwide telecom consumer spending on non-voice mobile services, from music, to search, mobile TV and video downloads, location based services, games, gambling and mobile payment services will exceed $250 Billion. But is Europe's mobile industry ready to successfully monetise it?" Source Financial Times.

A big player in the telecom European market, Deutsche Telekom, was the second guest for the TechIE Club.

On the 28th of March, we received Stefan Behrendt, Senior VP for Corporate Development & International Business in T-Online, now part of Deutsche Telekom. Mr. Behrendt gave a detailed presentation of how the Telecom market is today being mixed with the internet business.

Lots of players converging like: operators, hardware and software vendors, service retailers, media companies, IT services providers, device manufacturers, infrastructure builders and finally lots of internet companies, leveraging specially the web 2.0 movement.

That's changing the way business is being done, as corporations are switching its former vertical structure with different business lines into a more horizontal one, involving most of the actors in the value chain.

Dear TechIE people!

As we talked about in the first meeting for the Club, we will hold TOMORROW a pre-Christmas meeting to discuss about specific activities to carry out during 2007, in room P-413 (Pinar, 18), starting at 4 pm.

Hopefully the meeting won't be too long for those of us finishing works before holidays it won't be too time consuming. For the people that cannot attend the meeting and want to suggest something, please send an email to techie.club@ie.edu, and Merry Christmas and see you next year!

Summarizing a bit some of the things that we discussed during the presentation in our first meeting:
TechIE Day to be organized perhaps by end of April, beginning or May. I'd like MBAs, IMBAs, EXMBA, etc. to tell us depending on their schedule, which could be the best time to attend (depending on exams, projects, etc.), so IE people is more willing to come.
Brainstorming: concretized in expert panels (and?). Some of our targets could be to try to bring Enrique Dans and/or/vs Martin Varsavsky, which are very related to IE.
Blogs / newsletter : this requires continuity
Publish publications, articles, focusing on business development plans: collaboration required among us, as this involves certain workload added to our Programmes
Partnering with other Clubs for certain mixed panels (GBE, Net Impact, ... ?)
Promote IE among today's new internet media (?): videos, content,... The idea would be to make IE present in those places where American Universities may be taking the lead
The Club should provide some kind of 'output' to make visible our actions

Do you want to understand the business around all the strange acronyms around telecoms? Do you know the new business opportunities behind the combination of your mobile phone, TV and Internet? Today we´re living the Renaissance of the Information Technologies. After the glorious days in the end of the 90´s and the "Dark Age" of the bubble burst, new movements like the Web 2.0 and the Convergence progress are changing the "Digital Economy".

Based on these thoughts we have come up with the idea of creating a TechIE Club. We expect it to be a forum and a resource in IE for the students interested in this world. Among our proposed activities, we want to prepare a "TechIE Day" for next spring, maybe other conferences/events and also to be a reference point in exchange of ideas about this exciting market (maybe you want to create the "next big thing" in internet?).

What do you want TechIE Club to be? We will make a brief presentation on the 30th of November at 4 pm at class P-312 (C/Pinar, 18). Those of you that are interested, please send us an email with your ideas and suggestions for the Club as well as if you’re willing to attend the presentation session to techie.club@ie.edu

See you @TechIE!
Daniel Torres, Álvaro Prendes and Amparo Marín (all MMTDB 06)
